I’ve been confirmed to give a talk about Android app design at the next Newcastle iOS Developers meeting. No, I’m not trolling! My talk, “Android Strokes for iOS Folks”, is aimed at the iOS developer who’s looking to port an existing iOS to Android, or are curious about this other mobile platform.
There’s some important differences between the two platforms, such as XML-based layouts, the Intent system, home screen widgets, the use of fragments, resource scaling and UI concepts such as the Action Bar and the pesky back button. This makes porting an iOS app a non-trivial task. To get the best user experience on this platform, I’m encouraging you to embrace Android, rather than mimic iOS.
ios_NCL have lots of excellent discussions on a monthly basis, covering predominately iOS but also tech talks in general. Last month they were playing with Arduinos! I’d strongly advise, if you’re in the region, to follow them on twitter and come along to my talk!
